For our daughter's 9th birthday, we decided to have an outdoor/indoor "camp" theme. The girls played outside while they waited for everyone to arrive, and many played
basketball. When everybody had arrived, we all took off walking to a close by pond, where there were ducks and geese. I had saved several pieces of bread from
various loaves and bagel packages, and the kids got to feed the geese and ducks. They played for a while at the pond before we ventured back home.
The party was a sleepover, and when we got back, we had a hotdog, bean and chip dinner. All the girls had brought a baggie of "swaps", which is a Girl Scout tradition. Swaps are any little trinket of choice made out of craft supplies with a safety pin attached. I had painted all of their names on baseball caps, and they traded whatever "swap" they had made with each other. They pinned them on their hats to keep. After present opening, we took advantage of the last part of daylight with more outdoor play. They played "TV tag" and flashlight tag". We then enjoyed cake and ice cream. The cake had a little girl inside a sleeping bag painted in frosting on it. Our next big activity included making pillows. I had cut out small pieces of muslin material, and all the girls colored designs of their choice on the pillows with crayons. We then ironed them with a piece of newsprint in between the fabric and the iron. This sealed in the color. Then I use a glue gun to glue two pieces of fabric together (inside out), leaving one little hole, and then turned them right-side out for the girls to fill the hole with polyfil. My husband and I then used the glue gun to finish closing the pillows. They loved them! Then everyone got on their pajamas, and we watched the original "Parent Trap" on film. It was fun because it also was about going to camp. As they were settling down getting ready for their sleeping bags, my husband showed a slideshow of the kids including pictures he had taken throughout the course of the evening on our digital camera. He had been loading them on the computer all night. There was at least one good picture of each girl. They really thought this was special! In the morning we fixed scrambled eggs, fruit cocktail, and blueberry muffins for breakfast (juice or milk to drink). For gift bags to take home, I had glued craft sticks on grocery bags in the shape of a cabin. Each bag had the girl's name and included a miniature tube of toothpaste, a "s'more kit"--graham cracker, chocolate and a big marshmallow, their pillow and their swap cap. It was fun!!!
