My three year old requested a Doggy Party" this past year.
)She also loves "Build a Bear" so we centered our party around a trip to the store to pick out and make dogs. We had the kids meet at the food court of our mall one half an hour in advance of the Build a Bear Party time. At the tables we arranged a place setting for each child. I purchased the dog bowl and placement sets from Build a Bear in advance but again you could probably use similar items from a dollar store. I filled each bowl with Kix cereal and placed it on each child's placemat. I purchased Dog Bone Sippers (dog bone shaped water bottles) and filled each with water. I made dog-boned shaped sugar cookies prior to the party and placed one cookie in each dog bowl. This was the food as our party was between meals. Also at each placemat I had a party favor bag for each child. I purchased plain white paper bags (approximately 9 inches high) from the craft store. I decorated each bag with the child's name in black stickers and scattered black paw print stickers over the rest of the bag. Inside each bag I placed a set of spotted black and white dog ears on a headband a "dog tail" for each child made of a stuffed thin tube-shaped dalmation fabric (about 12 inches in length) made by sewing or gluing dalmation-spotted fabric and stuffing with pillow filling and attaching to a ribbon large enough to tie around each child's waist. The bags also contained a red bandana to tie around their necks (purchased from the local dollar store). I finally added some small board books about a dalamation to each bag (from the dollar store) and a plastic dog bone toy filled with dog bone crayons and inserted a dog coloring sheet in each bag to keep the kids busy. As the kids arrived and found their seats we had the adults help to face paint each of them with black and white spots using face paints purchased from our local party and costume store. After all kids had arrived had their faces painted and put on their doggy gear we headed down to Build a Bear to make our dogs. I had met with the Build a Bear staff in advance so that the children were only offered the selection of dogs (they had six different dogs to choose from at our local store). Each child then received a dog sound and got to pick a leash and collar set for their dog. This pre-planning helped keep it simple for the little kids and helped me to not have an enormous bill at the end. I had asked the Build a Bear staff in advance to tailor the party around dogs and to teach the dogs tricks on top of the usual activities to build a bear (or dog) like washing/brushing the dog. We had the kids lead the dogs around the store teach them to roll over sit up etc. This was great at Build a Bear but could also be done at home with stuffed dogs you purchase if you don't have a store near you or want to save money. The kids left after having a fabulous time. We had the attention of the entire mall with all of our kids dressed like dogs barking and all! I still hear reports back from the parents of the kids who attended that they love their dogs and continue to play with them on their leashes feed them with their dog dishes and dress up like dogs around the house. This was a really fun party to put together. Also we have lots of toys so we opted to instruct guests to either bring themselves because "their presence was present enough" or to bring pet items from a local animal shelter for our daughter to donate at a later date in lieu of a gift. This was a fun way to help kids give back and avoid more clutter in our home."
