For my son's 1st birthday we decided to give him a sports theme extravaganza! We started with taking a photo of him in a Lakers Jersey surrounded by balls and helmets and other sports stuff. This photo was then turned into a 5x7 invitation that read: Let The Games Begin! Come slide in to home and catch all the action  at (child's name) 1st birthday. Game day is (Date) Tip of is (Time) @ (Family Name) Field. Avoid a penallty and RSVP to the coach (phone #) Don't forget to wear your favorite team logo or colors. We sealed each envelope with a ball sticker and sent them off addressed to Team (family names). On the day of the event, we decorated anything and everything. I purchased VERY inexpensive blow up balls and hung them from the ceiling with fishing line. I threw a dozen of them on the yard for the kids to play with. I also hung lots of streamers and a big score board made from butcher paper with my sons name and the  score was 1. For centerpieces I purchased blow up #1 finger hands (he was a year old) I attached them to pompoms and laid them in the center of each table. I then surrounded that centerpiece with a couple of bags of peanuts and boxes of crackerjacks. I also laid whistles and scattered baseball cards. The centerpieces were easily taken apart and used or eaten at the party in order to avoid waste. I made large balls out of butcher paper and hung them to walls. In the fron yard at the entry way I made large megaphones with messages like He's #1" and " Go Danny Go" and placed them on sticks and lined the walkway with them. I also a purchsed a few decorations from the local party store to add to the home made ones. I also covered the backyard wall with mylar balloons and colorful latex ones too. For Lunch we had a nacho bar salads and chips. The cake was a baseball field. For Fun: we had a sports theme obstacle jumper the kids also traveled to two stations: one they created their very own medal and the other they created their own foam banner. I also had a special center set aside with a sign titled "Die hard Fans" There the kids and adults could put sports fake tattoos and face paint in their favorite team colors. I also purchased "rally sticks" for the kids to blow up and play with. We also had a pinata shaped like a referee and filled with candy and sports goodies. After Lunch I showed a slideshow of my sons first year set to music that I created and showed on a large screen made of white paper. I also had "Jock Jams" playing throughout the party and The '88 World Series Highlights on the television where some of the party was taking place. For treats: Each child took home a bag filled with a sports note pad and pencil whistle bean ball candy ball ring gum and other sports goodies. They also took home their pinata bag "rally sticks" and a pom pom finger hand and blow up ball if they wanted to along with their crafts. Almost everyone showed up in a team shirt even my Grandma!! Everyone had such a great time and I was so glad to see the kids running around and having a blast! "
