My daughter turned 7 on the 7th of the 7th of 07 and we wanted something special to recogonise such a special date. She loved the story of Alice in Wonderland and we went with the theme. We sent out invites on pearlised card with text and vintage images of Alice et al from the internet and sent them in waxed sealed envelopes in the post to all her little mad hatters. Kids where asked to wear 7 items in there favourate colour or a really mad" hat! I organised to hire the local scout hall and was able to set up 4 tables end to end to create an amazingly long table to dress. We covered it in cloth and covered that in plastic "lace" catering table cloths. The table was set with vases of heart and rose shaped lollipop boquets which I found in reject shops and each child could take one when they left the table. We borrowed cup cake stands and the like for the cupcakes and biscuits and bought plastic heart shaped plates in bright colours to put cut fruit vegetables and dips on. Platters of mini cucumber sushi and pint sized sandwhiches where spread in between. I scoured opportunity shops for sets of demitasse - mini- tea cupssaucers and plates so that each child could be served flavoured milk and "high tea" in/on china during tea time. We had also bought "Alice in Wonderland" pins over the internet from the USA and each child recieved one when they arrived. Kids where also given a little bottle of bubbles with a tag which said "blow me blow me!" We where able to hire very cheaply (less than $60AU for all 3) some overscale yard games of "snakes and ladders" "croquet" and "belly bumpers"(like tweedle dee and tweedle dum)and Ive never seen kids(or grown ups) have so much fun. My daughter was of course "Alice" and we have a wonderful photo of her on the "snakes and ladders" board contemplating the next dice roll. A friend very graciously aggreed to dress up as the queen of hearts she had to hire a hoop petticoat but sewed up a dark sheet she had painted with red and white stripes and stuck a pack of cards to it and wore a red corset style top. She sprayed her hair red and painted a heart on her cheek. She kept everyone in order as she could act the part as no one else knew her. We played "whats the time mad hatter" and had the kids learn "nutbush city limits". We had bought fabulous "scatchies" (on ebay)in an "Alice" theme which we where able to personalise with our daughters birthday and name for every ten you recieved two winning cards -which meant there really was an element of surprise to see who would win. We awarded prizes in a lucky dip top hat we made- for the best dressed best manners and best hat which involved a very silly parade lead by our Queen of Hearts. When the kids left we gave them all a coloured paper handled bag which where labeled with a tag "pick me Johnny" etc and inside we had a childs hankerchief wrapping an over sized melamine coffe cup which my daughter had written each childs name with special markers and a cappuchino template. Each child was also handed a miniature sealed bottle of brightly coloured sand on a strand of string by the queen to make wishes upon and wished a very merry happy unbirthday.  We all had a wonderful time and my daughter felt like she had been part of a little bit of magic even if for only this special day."
