I first did this "Wizard of Oz" party for my five year old but it was so sucessful, that I repeated it two years later for my other daughter's sixth b'day. I changed a few
things around the second time, so I will try to include all the ideas (I got many of them from your site!)
First, the invitations: I downloaded a lot of "Oz" clipart from the internet (there are many sites). On the front I had a picture of the characters skipping down the yellow brick road toward the Emerald City. I put the words, "Follow the yellow brick road to Megan's sixth B'day party" and on the inside I invited all the children to come dressed as their favorite character. Of course, the birthday girls were dressed as Dorothy, complete with costume and ruby slippers. We put folded yellow tablecloths lining the path to the house and by the steps entering the house, we had moved my daughters' outside little tykes playhouse. We stuffed white tights and had made black stripes on them with electrical tape and had the ruby slippers on the feet, sticking out from underneath the house. This was a big hit!! I downloaded music from the movie and made a CD that we used throughout the party. We had music playing as the guests arrived. we put a sign on the door that said "Doorbell broken- Please Knock", like in the movie. I also made copies of Coloring pages from the movie and had them set up for the kids to color quietly while they waited for all the guests to arrive. After the kids colored and had pizza, then we did a craft. i bought plastic high heeled shoes from the wedding section of a craft store and pre-drilled small holes in the heel. I strung thin sparkling roping to make necklaces and the children covered them with glue and red glitter and had ruby slipper necklaces. While these were drying we went into the play room, where I had the movie playing on a big screen. I handed all the girls their "favor bags" which resembled Dorothy baskets . I folded down brown paper lunch bags and attached a brown paper handle. I bought blue & white gigham fabric and put a small piece in each "basket" to line them. they looked so cute. as an alternative, for my other daughter's party, I made hot air balloons by folding down bags and attaching a helium balloon. either idea looked great. then I took the children on a trip through Oz. we stopped the movie at the point where Dorothy met Glinda. And then we played "pass Glinda's crown". I had large swirly lollipops as prizes for the game winners (lollipop guild) but everyone got something at the end of each game. After Glinda's game, I passed out small bubbles (like from a wedding) and I had made labels on the computer for them that had a picture of Glinda and said "Glinda's bubbles". Then we "travelled" down the road to the next character, the Scarecrow, and we played an "Oz" trivia game. I made diplomas that said "PhD in Thinkology...." and rolled them like diplomas and gave them out. Our next stop was the Tin Man. I made a TinMan on a posterboard and cut out hearts and we played "Pin the heart on the tinMan" The children all got chocolate hearts to put in their "baskets". the next stop was the lion. I froze icecubes made of green juice and had made small "brooms" out of toothopicks and fringe and froze them in there. The children had to suck on them and the first that could bring me the broom from the "wicked with of the west" was the winner. I made medals of bravery for each child by gluing ribbon to a gold covered chocolate coin. After that we were ready to go to the the Emerald City. While we had been in the other room, my mom and older daughter had transformed the kitchen into the Emerald city with green tablecloths and paper goods, streamers, balloons....evn dressed in green and sprayed green on their hair. the kids were so excited. We had cake, decorated with the yellow brick road and characters and I had made jello cups with all the colors of the rainbow topped with whipped cream. I also made a green foamy punch and floated a small witch's hat on top. We then did a "rainbow" pinata outside. The kids had a ball and the moms were so impressed! I added some more things to their baskets that all had to do with our "theme": stick-on emerald green earrings, small pkgs of skittles candy (the rainbow candy), rainbow erases, lollipops, rainbow stickers, packs of animal crackers that I had labelled (from the computer) with pictures and words that said "lions and tigers and bears.....Oh My bakery co.", the coloring sheets, and all the goodies that they had earned during the games and their pinata candy. It was such a blast and every year, my girls' friends want to know what kind of party they are going to have next year.
