Kids Birthday
Party Supplies

When our daughters turned 3 and 5 last February, we decided to have a "Wizard of Oz" party since it was one of their favorite movies.  Our youngest daughter had been Dorothy for Halloween so she already had her dress and shoes. I purchased blue/white gingham fabric at Walmart and made a Dorothy dress for our older daughter. Since their birthdays were just a couple months after Christmas, it was easy to find the red glitter shoes at Target. I purchased the Wizard of Oz party supplies (invitations, plates, cups, tablecloth, centerpiece, blow-outs, a cardboard rainbow cut-out and thank-you notes) at www.1800partyconsultant.com.  On the invitations, we asked everyone to RSVP to the Wicked Witch and to dress like one of the characters from the movie for the party. On the day of the party, everyone arrived in costume (a few Dorothy's, a ballerina, a witch, a farmer, a tinman and Glinda).  I dressed up like the Wicked Witch and my husband dressed up like the Mayor of Munchkinland. My husband wore a leprechaun costume that we ordered from Oriental Trading company.  As the guests arrived, they saw a sign which read "This Way to Kansas". They entered the house through our mud room which was decorated like Kansas with black, gray and white streamers and balloons.  When they opened the door which leads to our family room, they were suddenly transported to Munchkinland. They stepped onto the yellow brick road, which I made from yellow plastic banquet table covering (lines drawn in for bricks) and under the cardboard rainbow. Beside the yellow brick road, there was a house made from a large cardboard box) which represented Dorothy's house. Under the house were the witch's legs and ruby slippers. For the witch's socks, I took a pair of my daughter's socks and drew on the black stripes with a permanent marker. The witch's shoes were made from a small pair of clear plastic shoes (purchased from the party supply store in the wedding area).  I sanded each shoe (to the paint would adhere), spray painted them with red paint and then applied red glitter spray (purchased from a local craft store).  The family room was decorated with large tissue paper flowers and lots of colorful balloons.  Throughout the entire party, we played the Wizard of Oz soundtrack (purchased at Walmart).    We played a total of 4 games (Pin the Heart on the Tinman, Bean Bag Toss in the Cowardly Lion's Mouth, Ring Toss on the Witch's Hat, Pass Glinda's Magic Wand) followed by Broomstick Limbo (the witch's broomstock was purchased at I-party.com).  Pin the Heart on the Tinman:  I purchased silver poster board and drew the Tinman on it with a black permanent marker.  I cut it out and taped it to a door.  Around the Tinman, we tapes several red hearts (purchased at the party supply store) with the names of each of the children written on them. When this game started, each child retrieved the heart with their name on it, was blind-folded, and tried to place it on the heart that I had drawn on the Tinman's chest.  Bean Bag Toss in the Cowardly Lion's Mouth:  I used a large box (approx. 3 feet wide, 4 1/2 feet tall and 1 1/2 inches thick (it was from our art easle) and painted the entire box with off-white spray paint. I drew the lion's face and upper body on it, painted it with acrylic paint from the craft store and cut out the mouth opening with a utility knife. The bean bags were made out of leftover blue/white gingham fabric from my daughter's dress and stuffed with dry white rice.  Ring Toss on the Witch's Hat: I simply put a witch's hat on top of a plastic megaphone (purchased at I-party.com).  We used 3 brass rings (purchased in the craft section at Walmart).   Pass Glinda's Magic Wand:  This game is basicly like hot potato. We passed a magic wand to the Wizard of Oz soundtrack. After the games, we all went up to our dining room which was decorated like the Emerald City (lots of green balloons, streamers and metallic shamrock garland (purchased at the party supply store [St. Patrick's Day decoration]).  Each of the kids put on a Tinman hat for the birthday song (plain party hats painted with silver spray paint).  We served birthday cake, heart cookies, rainbow jellow with Cool Whip clouds, and green Kool-Aid. At the end of the party, each child received a goodie bag stuffed with Wizard of Oz themed items. I tried to have something for each of the main characters in the movie.  Each bag included a ruby slipper (a clear plastic shoe painted with red spray paint and red glitter spray), a gold medallion necklace(the Lion's medal of courage), heart sticks and chocolate heart candy (the Tinman's heart), lyrics to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and Wizard of Oz coloring pages which I found at www.ozwiz.net, rolled up and tied with curling ribbon (the Scarecrow's diploma), a small bottle of bubbles (representing the bubbles that Glinda arrives in), a green glow-in-the dark bouncing ball (representing the Emerald City).  I purchased the medallions, heart stickers, bubbles and balls at Oriental Trading Company For the bubbles, I removed the original labels and printed new labels which had an image of Glinda (found at www.ozwiz.net) on them and which read "Glinda's Magic Bubbles". We used inexpensive, clear goodie bags, tied them with blue/white gingham ribbon and arranged them in a basket (like Dorothy's basket).    I spent several weeks preparing for this party, but it was worth it. Everyone had a really great time, and I know our girls will remember the party for years to come.  Plus, this party is great for boys and girls.    Coincidentally, my husband's nickname is Oz and he will be turning 40 next year.  I kept most of the decorations and plan to have an "Over the Rainbow / Wizard of Oz" party for him, rather than an "Over the Hill" party.
