My daughter is in love with the "Wizard of Oz"so we planned a trip over the rainbow for her. She borrowed a Dorothy costume and her friends were encourage to dress up also. We drew
bricks on the driveway leading to the front door and covered them with yellow celophane for the yellow brick road.
As each guest arrived one of her three brothers answered the door and told the guest the bell was out of order and then hung a sign on the knob that said knock. When all the guest arrived we left the gifts with a stuffed Toto to guard them and went to search for Dorothy's ruby slippers. Next door under a play house were stripped stockings and the ruby slippers were on them. The birthday girl put on the slippers and we return to the house to open the gifts. To our disappointment all that was on the gift table was a letter. "I have taken your gifts and your little dog too just try and have a Happy Birthday now!" The Wicked Witch of the West. We remained calm and called out to The Great and Powerful Oz to help. With a little help of a microphone (and Dad hidden) The Great and powerful Oz told Dorothy and her friends that they must help the Scarecrow get a brain, the Tinman a heart, and the Lion some courage. We went to the Emerald City(dining room)to answer some trivia questions about the movie. We had taken some green cellophane covered the windows and put green bulbs in the chandelier to creat the Emerald city. We gave each guest a green pompom(to keep as a party favor) to shake when they got the right answer. They needed twenty right to receive a diploma for the scarecrow. Inside the diploma was a rainbow fruit roll-up to add to their goodie bag. Next, we moved outside where we had a plastic kiddie pool filled with Easter grass in all the colors of the rainbow, candies, and a red plastic heart jewel for each guest. They had to toss the grass to find the Tinman's heart and gather candy for their goodie bag. Last ,but not least, we entered the family room where my husband had taken black crepe streamers and draped the streamers over each paddle. Then he taped them to the fan paddles and puddled them on the floor about 8 inches. The fan was turn on low and a twister appeared. To get the Lion his courage they needed to brave the twister and pick up a medal under it. We had no problem with encouraging them to go under the twister. It was the hit of the party. We had returned the gifts while the girls were playing in the twister. We opened gifts and then went to the kitchen for food. We dined on hotdogs on Emerald City green buns and rainbow bread finger sandwiches. (The local supermarket put food coloring in the buns and twirled it the bread.) We had bowls of skittles. We had Wicked witch punch with rainbow sherbert and a small black witches hat floating in it. (The punch was green HiC, gingerale, and 1/2 sugar) We had a Rainbow Cake from the bakery and they made a Toto Cake also. We had gotten all the party favors and papergoods with Dorothy and her friends on them. We had a great time and everyone seemed very happy with their party treasures. The bags were already almost full we added a $1 store diary with a rainbow on it and Wizard of Oz stickers. The Birthday girl clicked her heels and the party ended.
