For my daughters third birthday party she chose the Wizard of Oz theme.
To keep with the theme we have planned the following. We are starting with the yellow brick road. I bought washable yellow paint so we could paint the brick road up to the house and then also on the patio. The yellow brick road on the patio will start with the spiral that Dororthy traveled on from Munchkin land. We will use the spiral portion when we do our Wizard of Oz cake walk. To bring the party to life we have asked everyone to come in costume (or not if they prefer). My daughter will be Dorothy complete with ruby red slippers and toto. But keeping with the theme she has to obtain the slippers from the Wicked Witch of the East. I have design the legs out of white Nylon stockings (stuffed) and painted with stripes. These will be sticking out from the crawl space under the house. From here she will go to get the ruby red slippers to place on her feet. Besides the Yellow Brick road cake walk I have two other activities planned for the kids. Pin the heart on the Tinman and Wizard of OZ rainbow bracelets. The kids are all 2-3 years of age so with the help of their parent we will make bracelets out of fruitloops and stretch sting. To help create the atmosphere for the party I have a collection of Wizard of Oz cardboard characters that will be used for the tables and the walls. I also found a wonderful Hotair balloon (the balloon itself is 5' tall) which will be in the backyard. Rather than using the hotair attachment which can be risky around little ones, I will be filling the hotair balloon with helium balloons to keep it afloat. It will make a perfect backdrop for Polaroid pictures so the kids have a keepsake. The cake will be either a sheet cake with the Rainbow theme or individual cupcakes using the rainbow colors for frosting. (a row of pink, yellow, green, blue, and purple). And finally the party bags. I found some wonderful coloring book pages online and made a selection of 10 pictures in a personalized Wizard of Oz coloring book. Each book has a special message in the back to our friends and family and the back of the book has a message to my daughter and reference to her birthdate. Along with these I have big lollypops (like the lollypop guild) and cut out paperdolls for each child). This will be a day in Oz to remember.
