Wizard of Oz: 8th Birthday Party Seventeen lively girls were invited to Follow the Yellow Brick Road to my daughter's 8th birthday party. It began with an invitation with a scanned
picture of Dorothy and Toto.
The porch was decorated with a vertical banner declaring "Toto, I don't think we're in Kansas!!" On a table greeting the guests was a "centerpiece" Mom greeted the guests in a long dress, with a wand and the birthday girl word a jumper and Dorothy-like braids. We purchased a 12 inch round styrofoam (1 inch thick) and covered it with painted a yellow brick pattern. We added artificial flowers and green plastic grass as well as the Barbie Dorothy, Glinda and three munchkins. There were two activities as the guests arrived. They were divided into two groups. One group, in the kitchen, which was decorated with pink and purple streamers, made emerald city glasses. Using white poster board, we cut out glasses frames, supplied green sequins, green ribbon, and markers. The girls decorated the frames and glued on a craft stick. Then we pasted green transparent paper in the eye hole, and let them dry. At the same time, in the den, with the aid of two eager twelve year old helpers, one dressed as the Wicked Witch and one as a munchkin, helped the girls freshen up before they visited the Wizard. The den was decorated with pink and purple streamers and the table had Munchkin Land yellow and red nailpolish, Yellow Brick Road yellow polish, Emerald City Green polish, etc. We had nail gems, roll on glitter and the girls could have their hair braided with ribbons. Then we had a scavenger hunt. The girls were divided into 4 groups, each with a list of things to find. There were tin -man hats, made of funnels, and ample stuffed animals, including evil monkeys, lions, tigers, bears, witches hats. Also, artificial poppy flowers, and three types of certificates (Diploma, Courage and Heart) We also had some castles that the girls made a while ago, ruby slippers fashioned out of foam, etc. They loved this. We had the Wizard of Oz sound track playing all the time. We made a yellow brick road going from the hall, to the den to the living room and then to the Dining Room, which was Emerald City !! We put green streamers all over the ceiling, made a :I am the great and powerful oz!! banner and constructed Emerald City from cellophane in green. We covered the inside of the windows with the cellophane, and made a castle on the wall. The cellophane sticks to the wallpaper on its own.. without any tape. It was great. Each girl, after they were "Cleaned up" like in the movie, could to Emerald City on the Yellow Brick Road, and had her photo taken with the birthday girl. They loved this too, and we will scan the photo in the thank you notes. Then, we opened presents playing pass the present to the Wizard of Oz soundtrack. The girls all took their presents, sat in a circle and when the music stopped, whichever present the birthday girl was holding, well that is the one that was opened. The refreshments were served in Emerald City. For food we had green Jell-O jigglers, a home made cake which was a simple single 1/2 sheet cake, made with white icing and a swirl of yellow icing with silver candles. We had green Gatorade. We used Wizard of Oz plates and Napkins and supplemented with green plates. We had mini Oreos and mini goldfish for munchkin snacks. We had a variety of favors from Birthday Express, (heart bucket, stickers, earrings, and a silver wand) and the girls took home their crafts and a yellow brick. The brick was made by using an old cardboard play brick. A week before the party, my daughters used white paper and rolled yellow paint and then glitter glue over the paper, and "wrapped" the brick. We also found a pack of green decorative marbles and gave these gems as favors. They were very popular. The cake was displayed on top of these bricks, with green gems all around them. The party lasted two hours and was a blast. We made several banners in Print Shop, including Follow the Yellow Brick Road, down the hallway, Tap your heels together and say...There's no place like home and the others mentioned.
