Wizard of Oz - 4 year old I wanted to do something really special for my daughter's 4th Birthday and after checking through the internet I was happy to find this site and go with the Wizard of
Oz theme. I got a lot of ideas from this site and added a few of my own. Since my daughter has a December birthday, I picked up a lot of goodies the day after Halloween for 1/2
price (witches hat, scarecrow, wands, candy, etc.)
We have the Little Tikes House and this was a great prop. I placed it outside by my front door and had the wicked witches legs sticking out from underneath it (stuffed a pair of white nylons and used black marker to make the black lines). I also had the yellow brick road leading up to my front door (large yellow poster boards and drew bricks with a brown crayon). I placed potted silk flowers going up the brick road. My front door had a sign that read "Emerald City" with an arrow. I placed my Scarecrow inside my foyer standing next to my Fichus Tree with apple ornaments on it (like in the forest). My daughter had been Dorothy for Halloween last year so I just used the costume again and purchased new red glittery shoes from Wal-Mart. I purchased the Wizard of Oz paper goods from a local party shop. For party hats I made the tin man funnel hats (purchased at a local auto parts store and spray painted silver). On my cake table, I used a blue gingham fabric as a tablecloth decorated with white wicker baskets. Lunch consisted of hot dogs and chips and of course the wicked witch "melted" punch (Lemon-lime Kool-Aid, lime sherbet and a floating black "witch's hat). I had a scarecrow candy dish with skittles and a sign in front of it that read "Munchkin Mix". The cake was decorated with a yellow brick road and Dorothy and Toto and a rainbow in the background. For games we played pin the nose on the scarecrow (Halloween decoration), pass the wicked witch (the kids sat in a circle and passed the witch beanie bag around while the Wizard of Oz soundtrack played, similar to musical chairs). Witch Hat Ring Toss and a Hot Air Balloon Pinata to represent the Wizard's balloon. For party favors I bought red glittery gift bags and used yellow tissue paper (for the yellow brick road). Each bag consisted of "Glinda's Bubbles" (made labels from the computer), a box of Animal Crackers with a tag on the front that read "lion, tigers and bears....trademark of wizard of oz baking company" also printed from the computer). I also had bought Wizard of Oz stickers and used one on each of the tags. I made diplomas (to represent the scarecrow) for each child on my computer and personalized each one with the child's name and "Emerald City District". Pencils with red hearts (to represent the tin man), red heart lollipops, skittles wrapped in blue gingham fabric and tied with a white bow, and the red apple ornament were also in the gift bags. Picture perfect thanks yous. As each guest arrived I made a point of taking a picture of him/her with my daughter standing in front of the Little Tikes House. On the back of each picture, I drew a line down the middle so it looked like a postcard and wrote a thank you. Then I laminated the picture and sent it as a thank you. This was a great way to keep a lasting memory of a great day!
