We had a Wizard of Oz party for my daughter's 6th birthday. I had a large roll of white paper which I painted yellow & drew squares to look like the Yellow Brick Road. I laid this on
the sidewalk leading to the front door. The living & dining rooms were decorated in yellow & blue crepe paper and the movie was playing on our large screen TV without the sound.
For party hats I had the girls decorate "Glinda" cardboard crowns (which I got from a local fast food restaurant)with paint, glitter and small jewels. This kept them busy until all arrived. Since the girls were 6-7 years old, I folded and tied large pieces of different colored tissue paper in advance and the girls then separated and fluffed it up into flowers. I tied the flowers onto thin dowel rods and we placed them around the room for decoration. After the party the girls took their flowers home. We then played a variation of Musical Chairs. I wrote the names of Oz characters/places on cardboard squares, placed them in a circle and the girls marched around them while Oz music was playing. I would stop the tape and then pull a slip of paper with one of the same charac/places written on it. Whoever was in front of that square was out of the game and the square was removed. The last one standing won a prize. Another game - I bought tiny trinkets and pieces of candy (approx. 3 per child) which I wrapped and put in a pile. The girls sat in a large circle around it and I gave each three playing sized cards with characters/places written on them. (Can use Oz stickers if they can't read.) There were duplicate cards but no girl had 2 the same. I called out chara/places and if their card matched they picked a prize from the pile and placed it in front of them. When the pile is gone the fun part begins. We had a 2 minute time limit and I quickly called chara/places and if their card matched they got to take a prize away from someone else. You have to call out quickly so several girls are always moving at the same time. In the end "fix" the game to make sure everyone has at least 3 prizes and no one has more than 4. Since my daughter's birthday is in September I was able to buy small burlap scarecrows. I marked several scarecrows and hid them around the room. The girls then searched until each found one. Whoever had a marked scarecrow won a prize and everyone took their scarecrow home. We also had a rainbow pinata. The napkins, table cloth, etc. were store bought Wizard of Oz and we had bright blue & yellow plasticware. The cake had a rainbow on it and my daughter placed her small Wizard of Oz characters on top (her idea). I served individual cups of vanilla ice cream which are each colored a bright yellow, red or green. We also had hot dogs, pizza & juice. I took a picture of my daughter with each guest next to a large poster cutout of Dorothy and the Cowardly Lion and sent the picture with the thank you notes. The treat bags had a Wizard of Oz coloring book, small box of crayons, small plastic "Toto" dog and candy. While waiting for their parents to come the girls started marching around the house waving their flowers and singing We're Off to See the Wizard.
