WIZARD OF OZ DINNER PARTY: For my daughter's 3rd birthday we had a Wizard of Oz dinner party. Her birthday is in the dead of winter, so we rented out a local gymnastics place for the kids'
activity, but the party was carried with a Wizard of Oz theme. TABLE DECORATIONS: We had the tables decorated with yellow plastic tablecloths with a "rainbow" runner down the
middle made from rainbow wrapping paper. On each table was a colored basket decorated with five of the characters (all from toys we either had or borrowed.) Dorothy's basket had a Dorothy
doll, Toto, and red slippers. The Cowardly Lion's had a medal, a lion puppet with a Barbie cape on him, and a sign telling him to turn back. The Tin Man's was a Ken doll rapped in foil with a
triangle foil hat and a heart sticker on him, a plastic heart and a small watering can shaped with foil to look like an oil can. Glenda's had a Glenda doll, wand, and a crystal ball. The
Scarecrow's had a scarecrow doll, raffia for hay, and a diploma scroll made with paper and ribbon and a foil sticker. MENU: We served dinner on blue gingham plates and green cool aid
in yellow plastic cups with lids with each child's name on it to take home as a party favor. Each plate had a grilled cheese sandwich cut into two short and one long rectangles placed at the
top left of the plate to look like the "Emerald City" -- green flat sandwich pickles were put on top. Then there was a trail of fritos curved down the plate for the "yellow
brick road." To the right of the fritos was a small circle of leafy lettuce with strawberry "apples" on top and a large pretzel stick for the tree trunk. On the other side of
the of the fritos was a small container of marshmallows and pink flavored popcorn--"poppies in the snow." We purchased the cake decorated by the bakery with a house, yellow brick
road, green grass and flowers on it. PARTY FAVORS: We lined small baskets purchased at a dollar store with blue gingham wrapping paper. Each basket had a balloon tied to it to resemble
the "hot air balloon." Inside each basket, we put Wizard of Oz stickers (we made on the computer with a Bible verse for each character trait -- contentment, courage, love, wisdom. I
found a hot air balloon mold and made rice crispy treats decorated with icing and covered with plastic wrap. We also put in their personalized cup from dinner. The kids loved it,
especially our daughter!
